Great question Gordon. When applicable, I like to place mine on maps so that folks can see both the pictures and the context of where they were taken. Flickr and GoogleMaps do a respectable job at it (I prefer Flickr in the end). I have a more extensive post on the pros/cons of each here:

Good write up on what's available. I just recently started doing this too and use Downloader Pro (I already used it as part of my import/backup workflow.

For a while I was copying track info from the GPS to the computer, but then realised I don't even have to do that - downloader pro will just pull that data from the GPS mounted as a removable drive, so for me it is as easy as plug in the GPS, plug in the CF card and then hit 'download', backups get done, images get tagged and renamed - works well for my flow, but I don't do the DNG thing.

Then I just import the files into lightroom.

Now all I need to do is find useful things to do with GeoTagged photos - any suggestions ?

I use GpsPhotolinker with great success, even in RAW files.

http://oregonstate.edu/~earlyj/gpsphotolinker/

It can use GPX files as well as manual tagging.

Great point, Ollie. In other workflows, some of these tools would be quite useful, including Downloader Pro. I personally prefer to keep it all through LR, but it’s great to see a comment from someone who finds prefers a different workflow.

Just wanted to say thanks for a very useful article. I came to a somewhat different conclusion: I was already a Downloader Pro owner and was happy to see how easy geo-tagging my raw downloads was. Just put my gpx file into a gpx directory (downloader pro doesn't need you to clean out the old files) and run downloader pro. The xmp files it generates are read on import by LR.
